Meta Cuts 600 Jobs Amid AI Expansion and Automation Push

Meta is eliminating approximately 600 jobs in its artificial intelligence division as part of a major AI expansion push. The social media giant said the move aims to streamline operations and reduce bureaucratic delays within its Superintelligence Labs unit. The layoffs reflect Meta’s focus on increasing efficiency while continuing investment in AI innovation.

The Superintelligence Labs division, which employs nearly 3,000 people, includes teams dedicated to FAIR AI research, product-focused AI, and AI infrastructure. According to an internal memo, Meta hopes the reduction will allow remaining employees to make decisions faster and take on more responsibility. Chief AI officer Alexandr Wang emphasized that each team member will have greater scope and impact.

Meta expects many impacted employees to transition into alternative internal roles, Wang said, stressing that their skills remain valuable across the organization. Meanwhile, the newly created TBD Lab unit, tasked with next-generation AI models, will continue to expand and hire actively.

The cuts also extend to Meta’s risk division, where automation is replacing manual review processes. Chief compliance and privacy officer Michel Protti informed employees that new internal technology reduces the need for some positions.

Meta continues to position itself as a leader in artificial intelligence while balancing workforce adjustments. The AI expansion push is intended to improve productivity, reduce redundant processes, and strengthen the company’s technological infrastructure. Analysts note that while automation displaces certain roles, it also creates new opportunities within high-priority AI units.

Executives stress that the company remains committed to AI development, maintaining recruitment for critical research teams while optimizing staff allocation. Meta’s focus on efficiency and innovation underscores the increasing impact of AI on corporate structures and the evolving nature of digital workforces worldwide.
