Macron and Trump Clash Over Palestine at UN and on NYC Streets

Macron and Trump clash over Palestine not just in speeches at the United Nations, but also on the streets of New York. At the UN General Assembly, French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s formal recognition of a Palestinian state. He declared the move “essential to peace” and urged other world leaders to follow. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump strongly opposed the announcement during his own remarks. He called it a “reward for Hamas” that would only “encourage more violence.”

In contrast, Macron insisted that diplomatic recognition was a step toward long-term regional stability. He stated peace could not exist without a sovereign Palestinian state. Beyond the UN stage, tensions between the two leaders spilled into real life quite literally on the streets of Manhattan.

As Trump’s motorcade moved through the city, Macron stopped at a crosswalk. New York police froze traffic in every direction for the security convoy. A visibly annoyed Macron tried to move forward, but officers blocked him. “Sorry President, everything is frozen, the motorcade is moving now,” one officer told him.

Instead of waiting, Macron pulled out his phone and called Trump directly. Video footage, widely shared online, captured Macron’s sarcasm. He said, “Guess what, I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you.” After the call, officers cleared the road.

Shortly after, Macron continued walking through Midtown Manhattan, followed by a growing crowd. Tourists and locals stopped him for selfies. One person even kissed him on the head. Macron laughed and shrugged it off: “It’s just a kiss, makes no harm.”

Later, France’s embassy posted on X (formerly Twitter) with a playful message: “It’s a good thing our presidents have each other on speed dial… If you’ve ever had to walk through NYC during UNGA, this is 110% relatable content.” Ultimately, the day became a viral symbol of the ongoing divide between the two leaders.

Macron and Trump clash over Palestine diplomatically, ideologically, and even while crossing a New York street. As international pressure builds for new approaches to Middle East peace, one thing remains clear: Macron and Trump clash over Palestine, and the world is watching.
