U.S. Responds to Brutal Attacks on African Christians

Christians endure deadly attacks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and Mozambique. As the violence surges, the White House and State Department coordinate urgently to counter what they call a moral crisis.

Last week, the White House condemned the brutal machete attack that killed 49 Christian worshipers in eastern DRC, according to UN reports. These victims fell while praying peacefully in a church. Authorities blamed the Allied Democratic Forces, also known as Islamic State DRC, for that massacre. Meanwhile, in Nigeria’s village of Bindi Ta‑hoss, Fulani tribesmen killed 27 Christians. Eyewitness Solomon Sunday recalled fleeing with his family to the church. He lost his wife and second daughter during the attack. Another local leader, D’Young Mangut, added, “People are being killed like chickens. And nothing is being done.”

Christian Solidarity International president John Eibner said such atrocities have become routine across central Nigeria. He called it “violent Islamization” and reported over 165 Christian deaths in just four months in Plateau State. He noted this trend spans into predominantly Christian areas like Congo and Mozambique too. “There is no simple solution,” he warned.

Open Doors UK called the regional crisis “potentially existential” for stability. They reported 150,000 lives lost to jihadist violence over the past decade and over 16 million Christians displaced. Consequently, both the White House and State Department now treat religious freedom as a critical national and security priority. A State Department spokesperson confirmed they work daily with the White House to protect religious freedom globally.

Nigeria tops the list of the most dangerous places for Christians. During a March visit to Congress, Bishop Wilfred Anagbe spoke out. Afterwards, attackers slayed about 20 of his parishioners. The bishop described a growing Islamist militant network, including Boko Haram and ISIS West Africa. He warned that violent Islamist groups now take advantage of lax enforcement, and they push Nigeria toward ideological control. Bishop Anagbe fears fundamentalists seek to turn parts of Nigeria into an Islamic State.

David Onyillokwu Idah of the International Human Rights Commission made a grim comparison. “This is what the Nazis did to the Jews,” he said, calling it ethnic cleansing. John Samuel from Open Doors added that Christian worship can attract lethal violence. He told Fox News that many victims die for refusing to renounce their faith. One widow recounted her husband’s death after he declined to recite an Islamic prayer.

In Plateau State, militants grabbed land from over 64 Christian communities. Lawyer Jabez Musa fights to restore these lands. He said the displaced simply want their homes, land, and livelihood back. Open Doors UK’s CEO, Henrietta Blyth, outlined urgent needs: justice, restoration, and protection. She urged African governments to act now. She also demanded Western outrage over the widespread slaughter of Christians and moderate Muslims.

Musa personally appealed to President Trump to intervene. Meanwhile, a grieving relative in Nigeria demanded, “We need real security, not sympathy.” Christians endure deadly attacks and authorities must act swiftly. Christians endure deadly attacks and the silence cannot continue.
