Authorities recently uncovered decomposing bodies found at a funeral home in Pueblo, Colorado. During an inspection, inspectors discovered around 20 human bodies in various stages of decomposition. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies conducted the inspection at Davis Mortuary located at 128 Broadway Ave.
According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the discovery led to a summary suspension of the funeral home’s license. Brian Cotter, the funeral home’s appointed designee, admitted that some remains had been awaiting cremation for approximately 15 years. Furthermore, he confessed that he might have given families fake cremated remains.
Initially, inspectors noticed a strong odor of decomposition coming from behind a door covered with a cardboard display. After removing the display, Cotter requested they avoid entering the room. However, inspectors proceeded and found the decomposing bodies hidden behind that door.
At a press conference, Sam Delp, director of the Division of Professions and Occupations, confirmed the inspection was Davis Mortuary’s first. He also stated the number of decomposing bodies found was about 20.
Meanwhile, authorities are actively working to identify the victims and notify their families. Pueblo County District Attorney Kala Beauvais emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. She described the process as thorough and painstaking, saying, “It’s gonna’ be long, it’s gonna’ be tedious, and it’s gonna be thorough.”
Additionally, Pueblo County Sheriff Lucero revealed that Cotter’s brother is reportedly a co-owner of the funeral home. Officials have yet to file any formal charges against the mortuary or its staff.
In a separate but related investigation, officials discovered human remains on private property in Costilla County’s Wild Horse Mesa community. The victim’s identity remains unknown as authorities continue their efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death.
For now, authorities urge residents to report any concerns or information to the local District Attorney’s Office. The ongoing investigations highlight the seriousness of this disturbing case involving decomposing bodies found at the funeral home.
