New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani under fire after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week. Critics point to Mamdani’s role in labeling Kirk an “extremist” just a year ago.
In June 2023, Mamdani joined other Democrats in opposing a right-wing event in Long Island City. Their joint statement condemned Motif Studios for hosting the event, calling it “deeply disappointing.”
The statement singled out speakers Candace Owens and Charlie Kirk. It accused them of spreading “bigoted” and “transphobic” rhetoric. The letter called on the venue to cancel the event, arguing it was harmful to the community.
“Hate has no home in Queens, New York City, or anywhere else,” the statement read. Despite the calls for cancellation, the event went on. Kirk later posted a video showing a protester being escorted out.
Following Kirk’s assassination, political tensions in the city escalated. Republican Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz said Kirk died while exercising his right to free speech. He directly blamed political leaders like Mamdani for creating a culture of censorship and hostility.
“We must reckon with the environment created by figures like Zohran Mamdani,” Blumencranz told Fox News Digital. “Zohran Mamdani under fire isn’t just about this one issue. It’s about a pattern of silencing those he disagrees with.”
Blumencranz also pointed out Mamdani’s inconsistent defense of speech. “He defends extreme slogans like ‘globalize the intifada’ but opposes mainstream conservative voices,” he said. “That’s not leadership—it’s hypocrisy.”
“New York doesn’t need a ‘Silencer-in-Chief,’” he continued. “We need someone who values open dialogue.”
Nevertheless, Mamdani responded by calling Kirk’s murder “horrific” and “a symptom of America’s gun violence epidemic.” He told supporters the country must address political violence head-on. On social media, he said he was “horrified” and that violence has no place in American politics.
Still, the pressure continues to mount. Zohran Mamdani under fire is now a major headline in a heated mayoral race, with free speech and political tolerance taking center stage.
