YouTube Ad Revenue Hits $9 Billion as Global Subscriptions Soar

YouTube ad revenue surged to nearly $9 billion in the first quarter of 2025. That number reflects a year-over-year increase of more than 10%. Analysts had expected $8.97 billion, but YouTube reported $8.93 billion, falling just slightly short.

The platform, now 20 years old, continues to grow its financial footprint. YouTube ad revenue alone does not tell the full story. Subscriptions also play a crucial role in driving Alphabet’s broader earnings. YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, and YouTube Music bring in billions more.

Alphabet, which owns both Google and YouTube, exceeded Wall Street expectations for the first quarter. Paid subscriptions across all services topped 270 million. YouTube and Google One led that surge in consumer spending.

YouTube Music and Premium hit over 125 million subscribers during the quarter. Much of that growth came from the Premium Lite model, which costs $7.99 monthly. That’s cheaper than the $13.99 for full YouTube Premium and the $10.99 standalone YouTube Music option.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai called the quarter’s performance “strong.” He credited YouTube ad revenue, Google One, and rapid growth in Cloud services. AI tools like Search Overviews now draw 1.5 billion users each month.

YouTube finished 2024 with $54.2 billion in earnings. That made it the second-largest media company, just behind Disney. Analysts now believe YouTube may claim the top spot in 2025.

However, the impact of economic challenges remains unclear. New U.S. tariffs may affect ad sales outside the country. Alphabet’s Chief Business Officer noted that international ad revenue may face slight pressure.

Still, YouTube ad revenue keeps climbing. Its mix of global ads and growing subscriptions fuels ongoing momentum. If this trend continues, YouTube could become the most powerful media platform worldwide.
