Walmart Expands Fuel and Convenience Store Network Across the U.S.

Walmart is making major moves in the convenience store and fuel station industry. The retail giant announced plans to open or remodel more than 45 locations across the United States this year. This expansion builds on Walmart’s commitment to offering customers affordable and convenient shopping experiences.

Investing in Fuel and Convenience

In December, Walmart celebrated the opening of its 400th fuel station in Palm Springs, California. With over 400 locations nationwide, the retailer is rapidly expanding its presence in the fuel and convenience market. By the end of the year, Walmart will operate more than 450 locations across 34 states.

The company’s fuel stations offer competitive prices on gas, along with snacks and beverages priced the same as in Walmart stores. Additionally, Walmart+ members can save up to 10 cents per gallon, making fuel stops more cost-effective.

Enhancing the Customer Experience

Dave DeSerio, Walmart U.S. vice president of fuel and convenience, emphasized the importance of these investments. “We’re committed to expanding our physical store footprint. Adding dozens of fuel and convenience stations allows us to bring even more value to our customers,” he said.

He noted that shoppers trust Walmart for its low prices and convenience. Expanding fuel stations reflects the company’s focus on meeting customer needs and improving accessibility.

A Shift Toward Walmart-Operated Stations

Previously, Walmart partnered with Murphy USA, an Arkansas-based fuel provider, to manage its gas stations. However, in 2016, the company ended this 20-year relationship and decided to build and operate its own stations. This shift allowed Walmart to take full control of pricing, customer service, and expansion efforts.

With this year’s planned growth, Walmart is strengthening its position in the fuel and convenience sector. The company’s focus on affordability, accessibility, and customer savings will continue driving its expansion strategy.
