A diverse focus group consisting of Democrats, Republicans, and independents shared their reactions to former President Donald Trump’s remarks on wokeness and his assertion that there are “only two genders” during his address to a joint session of Congress.
Two separate live-response tests, conducted by a research firm specializing in voter sentiment, tracked real-time reactions from the three political groups as key moments from the speech unfolded.
The most striking results revealed that both Republican and independent voters responded very favorably to Trump’s statement that the U.S. would “no longer be woke,” while Democratic voters reacted negatively to his declaration about gender.
During the first test, participants watched a clip of Trump stating, “We’ve ended the tyranny of so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion policies across the entire federal government, as well as the private sector and military. And our country will be woke no longer.” As he spoke, Republican voters’ approval surged and remained significantly above neutral.
Trump continued, “We believe that whether you are a doctor, an accountant, a lawyer, or an air traffic controller, you should be hired and promoted based on skill and competence, not race or gender. Very important.” Republican approval remained high and even increased slightly.
Independent voters also showed a positive reaction, albeit with a slower rise. Their response eventually aligned with that of Republicans and remained there throughout the statement.
Democratic voters, however, showed little reaction to Trump’s comments on wokeness, with their response staying just slightly below neutral for the duration of the segment.
One political analyst reviewing the results noted, “Republicans and independents strongly supported this moment, with many expressing that it was long overdue. Some referred to it as a return to common sense.”
In the second test, the group listened as Trump declared, “I signed an order making it the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.”
Republican voters responded with immediate and strong approval, with their sentiment line quickly rising and holding steady. Independent voters showed a similar pattern, with their reaction starting slower but ultimately climbing to nearly the same level of approval.
In contrast, the Democratic response remained neutral at first before dipping slightly into the negative range following Trump’s statement.
The analyst noted a clear divide in reactions, stating, “Once again, Republicans and independents celebrated, while Democrats expressed frustration, with some characterizing it as a step backward for the country.”
She also observed that, overall, Democratic participants showed minimal reaction throughout the tests, neither strongly opposing nor engaging with Trump’s speech. Meanwhile, independents appeared to align more closely with Republicans in their responses.
