OpenAI has launched a new initiative allowing veterans access AI tools to support their transition to civilian careers. Veterans Access AI will give servicemembers within a year of separation or retirement, and first-year veterans, free access to ChatGPT Plus. Consequently, the program aims to help veterans use AI for career planning, resume writing, interview preparation, and other professional tasks. Moreover, OpenAI officials stressed the program provides practical support and real-world AI experience for transitioning service members.
The initiative also includes access to the company’s latest AI models and over 100 example chats created by OpenAI veterans. Additionally, participants can watch a tailored onboarding video and receive guidance through the OpenAI Academy. Katrina Mulligan, head of national security partnerships for OpenAI, emphasized that nearly 70% of veterans cite employment as their biggest challenge. Therefore, she noted that AI tools can make this transition smoother by offering flexible, anytime support and guidance.
Retired Gen. Paul Nakasone, OpenAI board member, said veterans face unique challenges translating military skills into civilian roles. He compared the initiative to historical programs like the GI Bill and modern veteran-focused technology efforts. Meanwhile, Army veteran Vikki Lampton highlighted that ChatGPT helps veterans understand benefits, demystify paperwork, and explore entrepreneurship. Furthermore, she noted that veterans gain confidence when using AI to navigate career transitions independently.
OpenAI team members, including Troy Peterson, stressed that the program draws from real experiences of veterans. In addition, Peterson explained that AI can act as a “force multiplier,” giving veterans practical tools to present skills and plan next steps. Katherine Webster, founder of Vets in Tech, added that veterans are uniquely equipped to leverage AI across industries, especially defense technology. Consequently, the program bridges the gap between military experience and civilian employment.
The program represents a growing effort to integrate AI in workforce development for veterans. Moreover, OpenAI expects that Veterans Access AI will help thousands of service members gain practical skills for diverse civilian careers. Officials also plan to expand outreach and continuously improve the resources based on veteran feedback. In short, the program demonstrates how AI can empower veterans and ease their transition into the civilian workforce.
