Verizon Introduces 35-Day Waiting Period to Unlock Fully Paid-Off Phones

Verizon implemented a new policy introducing a phone unlock delay for certain fully paid devices. The change affects customers who pay off their smartphones using digital or remote payment methods. Officials said the new waiting period strengthens fraud prevention and account security measures. However, the policy may limit flexibility for customers switching carriers or traveling internationally.

Under the updated policy, customers must wait thirty-five days after completing device payments online. This phone unlock delay applies to balances paid through the My Verizon mobile app. It also affects purchases completed using Verizon gift cards or online account payments. As a result, customers cannot immediately unlock phones after settling their remaining balance digitally.

However, Verizon clarified that customers who complete installment plans normally face fewer restrictions. Devices will still unlock automatically after customers make their final scheduled monthly payment. This automatic unlocking remains unchanged under the company’s current device unlocking rules. Nevertheless, customers choosing early payoff options may encounter the phone unlock delay instead.

The company explained that customers could avoid the waiting period through secure in-store payments. These secure methods include cash, chip-enabled credit cards, or contactless payment options. Corporate Verizon stores offer these payment options to ensure faster device unlocking eligibility. Customers using these approved payment methods may receive unlock approval within twenty-four hours.

The policy change follows regulatory adjustments by the Federal Communications Commission affecting unlocking requirements nationwide recently. Previously, Verizon automatically unlocked devices sixty days after initial activation under federal rules. However, regulators eliminated that requirement, allowing carriers to revise unlocking timelines independently. Consequently, Verizon introduced the new phone unlock delay under its revised procedures.

This change may create inconvenience for customers planning international travel with unlocked devices. Travelers often rely on unlocked phones to use local SIM cards abroad affordably. Additionally, customers selling their devices immediately after payoff may encounter transaction delays. These limitations could complicate carrier switching or resale opportunities for affected customers.

Verizon also confirmed separate rules apply to prepaid device customers under current policy. Prepaid smartphones remain locked for three hundred sixty-five days of active service. After completing that period, Verizon automatically unlocks eligible prepaid devices without additional requests. Company representatives emphasized the phone unlock delay helps protect customers from fraud risks.
