The Department of Veterans Affairs previously paid a contractor approximately $380,000 per month for minor website modifications before canceling the agreement and transitioning the work to an internal staffer, according to a recent discovery by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The same maintenance tasks are now being completed by a single VA software engineer in about 10 hours per week a dramatic reduction in cost. DOGE announced the findings Wednesday, praising the VA’s decision to discontinue the costly contract.
VA Secretary Doug Collins has supported such efficiency measures as part of broader reforms at the department, which recently announced plans to redirect $98 million annually to veteran services through workforce optimization.
The VA has not commented on the specifics of the discontinued web maintenance contract.
