USA Celtics Sale Hits $6.1B as Chisholm Secures Majority Control

The Boston Celtics officially changed ownership after private equity investor Bill Chisholm completed the purchase of the NBA’s most decorated team. The deal transferred majority control from a group led by Wyc Grousbeck, who had managed the franchise for more than two decades.

The Celtics went up for sale shortly after celebrating their record 18th NBA championship. Investor interest surged immediately, reflecting the team’s history, brand power, and global appeal. Eventually, Chisholm secured the winning bid with an offer that valued the franchise at more than $6.1 billion.

The NBA approved the sale unanimously, clearing the way for the transaction. Once completed, Chisholm assumed ownership of at least 51 percent of the team. Moreover, the agreement allows him to gain full control by 2028 at an additional cost. That future transfer could raise the franchise’s total value to nearly $7.3 billion.

This transaction set a new record for the price of an American professional sports team. Although part of the Los Angeles Lakers recently sold at a valuation of $10 billion, the Celtics deal still represents the highest confirmed purchase price in North American sports. Therefore, the USA Celtics sale underscores the rising valuations across the sports investment landscape.

Under Grousbeck’s ownership group, the Celtics transformed into one of the NBA’s most consistent franchises. They purchased the team in 2002 for $360 million, a fraction of today’s sale price. During their stewardship, the Celtics captured two NBA championships, reached the finals two more times, and qualified for the playoffs in 20 of 23 seasons.

Analysts say Chisholm’s acquisition reflects the enduring strength of professional basketball as an investment. Franchise values continue to climb due to media rights, sponsorships, and global fan engagement. Furthermore, the Celtics’ rich legacy, championship pedigree, and strong market base in Boston made the team especially attractive.

The USA Celtics sale demonstrates the growth potential of the sports business industry. Investors see franchises not only as cultural icons but also as valuable financial assets. With strategic leadership, Chisholm could further expand the Celtics’ global reach and commercial opportunities.
