US-Iran nuclear tensions have intensified after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed a US-backed proposal requiring Iran to halt uranium enrichment. The plan, presented during recent negotiations, aimed to replace Iran’s enrichment program with a regional consortium for nuclear fuel.
In a speech marking the death anniversary of Iran’s revolutionary founder, Khamenei called the proposal “100% unacceptable.” He emphasized that uranium enrichment remains non-negotiable, stating, “Who are you to decide whether Iran should have enrichment?”
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi echoed this stance, declaring, “No enrichment, no deal.” Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful but has stockpiled uranium enriched to 60%—close to weapons-grade levels.
President Trump warned that “time is running out” for Iran to decide. In a Truth Social post, he revealed discussing the issue with Vladimir Putin and demanded a “definitive answer soon.”
The US has reportedly given Tehran a two-month deadline to accept the deal or face potential military action. Trump previously abandoned the 2015 nuclear pact, arguing it failed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently reported Iran now possesses over 408kg of 60%-enriched uranium—enough for nine bombs. While Tehran denies seeking nuclear weapons, its breaches of the 2015 deal have alarmed global powers.
With US-Iran nuclear tensions at a critical point, the coming weeks will determine whether diplomacy prevails or sanctions and confrontation intensify. Iran’s negotiators are expected to formally respond soon, but Khamenei’s latest remarks suggest rejection remains likely.
