A heartbreaking tragedy recently unfolded in East Point, Georgia. A 3-year-old boy died after discovering an unattended firearm at home. He accidentally shot himself after handling the unsecured weapon.
Soon after receiving a report, officers rushed to the house on Hawthorne Way. When they arrived, they found the child unconscious with a gunshot wound. As a result, emergency personnel quickly transported him to Grady Memorial Hospital. Despite urgent treatment, the child did not survive.
According to investigators, the child had gone downstairs to find his parents. At that time, they were still asleep upstairs. Unfortunately, while exploring, the boy located the unattended firearm at home. He began playing with it, unaware of the danger. Moments later, it discharged, causing a fatal injury.
Meanwhile, other family members were inside the house. The gun, police confirmed, belonged to the child’s father. It had been left within reach, without proper safety measures. Therefore, the child was able to access it easily.
East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan spoke to the media about the incident. He stated that guns and children must never mix.
