U.S. to Host Trade Talks With South Korea Amid Tariff Concerns

U.S. officials are set to hold trade consultations with South Korea this week in Washington, according to a statement released by South Korea’s trade ministry on Sunday.

The talks, initiated by the United States, will take place alongside the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. Key figures from both governments will attend, including U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. South Korea will be represented by Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok and Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun.

While the specific agenda has not been disclosed, the discussions are expected to touch on tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. In particular, South Korea hopes to reduce a 25% reciprocal tariff that was previously announced by former President Donald Trump. Although the tariff was paused, it remains a key issue in ongoing economic dialogue between the two countries.

South Korean Trade Minister Ahn is scheduled to arrive in Washington on Wednesday. Officials from both sides have not provided further details on what will be discussed.

This meeting marks a continuation of ongoing economic cooperation between Washington and Seoul, as both nations seek to navigate global trade tensions while reinforcing their strategic alliance.
