A 36-year-old Mexican national faces federal charges after a U.S. immigration arrest in Houston turned violent. Javier Cornelio Cruz-Nava allegedly assaulted a law enforcement officer, leaving him with deep head wounds. Authorities confirmed he remains in custody pending further proceedings.
Federal and state agents conducted immigration enforcement activities in Houston. They reportedly attempted to stop Cruz-Nava’s vehicle using emergency lights, but he did not yield. Instead, he tried to evade authorities. Consequently, officers surrounded his vehicle, and Cruz-Nava exited and fled on foot.
A Texas Department of Public Safety agent in uniform chased him. The agent attempted to grab Cruz-Nava’s shirt, but he slipped free and continued running. Then, the agent wrapped his arms around Cruz-Nava to restrain him. At that point, Cruz-Nava lunged and threw the officer into a wrought iron fence.
Authorities quickly regained control and took Cruz-Nava into custody. During the incident, the officer suffered two deep head wounds. U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei emphasized the seriousness of attacking law enforcement. He said, “Those who attack officers are attacking the American system of justice.” He also stressed the region maintains a zero-tolerance policy for such actions.
If convicted of assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer, Cruz-Nava could face up to 20 years in prison. Additionally, he may incur a maximum fine of $250,000. The FBI conducted the investigation with support from Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations and DPS. Assistant U.S. Attorney John S. Ganz is prosecuting the case.
The incident forms part of Operation Take Back America. This nationwide initiative mobilizes the Department of Justice to strengthen enforcement against illegal immigration. Moreover, the program targets cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and violent offenders.
