Trump Raises Global Tariff Rate to 15% Following Supreme Court Ruling

Trump tariff increase takes effect after the Supreme Court struck down his previous trade program. President Donald Trump announced he will raise the global import tariff from 10% to 15%. The decision follows a ruling that limited his authority under emergency economic powers.

The Supreme Court concluded that Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Chief Justice John Roberts authored the opinion rejecting the broader tariff framework. Consequently, the administration quickly shifted toward a different statutory authority.

On Friday, Trump introduced a 10% universal tariff after the court ruling. However, less than twenty four hours later, he raised that rate to 15%. He described the move as fully legal and immediately effective nationwide.

The administration now relies on Section 122 of U.S. trade law. This provision allows temporary tariffs up to 15% for 150 days. However, lawmakers must approve any extension beyond that initial period.

Notably, no president has previously invoked Section 122 for such sweeping tariffs. Legal analysts therefore expect additional court challenges in the coming months. Meanwhile, trade partners assess the implications for global supply chains.

In a social media post, Trump defended the Trump tariff increase strongly. He argued that many countries have treated the United States unfairly for decades. Furthermore, he pledged to pursue other legally permissible tariffs during the 150 day window.

Specifically, officials plan to rely on national security and unfair trade statutes. Those laws allow targeted duties on certain products or specific countries. As a result, businesses face continuing uncertainty about future import costs.

The White House confirmed exemptions for critical minerals, metals, and energy products. Officials stated that these carve outs protect essential industries and supply stability. Nevertheless, many consumer goods will still face the higher rate.

Trade experts question whether Congress will extend the tariffs after 150 days. Polls show growing public concern about rising prices linked to import duties. Therefore, some lawmakers may hesitate to approve a long term extension.

Wendy Cutler of the Asia Society expressed surprise at the rapid escalation. She said the swift adjustment highlights volatility confronting global trading partners. Ultimately, the Trump tariff increase reshapes economic policy while igniting fresh political debate.
