Trump Moves to Eliminate Federal Advisory Boards in Cost-Cutting Effort

President Trump issued an executive order to eliminate several federal advisory committees. The order targets entities that have received federal funding, including the Presidio Trust, the Inter-American Foundation, the United States African Development Foundation, and the United States Institute of Peace.

This move aligns with efforts to shrink the federal government, curb unnecessary spending, and improve efficiency. The administration argues that cutting these organizations will save taxpayer dollars and streamline government operations. The affected entities have 14 days to submit reports to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), confirming compliance and justifying any necessary functions they perform.

Additionally, several advisory committees across various agencies will be dissolved, including the Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid, the Academic Research Council, the Credit Union Advisory Council, the Community Bank Advisory Council, the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Long COVID, and the Health Equity Advisory Committee.

The order coincides with another directive issued Tuesday, which mandates significant reductions in federal staffing. Under this policy, agencies will be restricted to hiring one employee for every four departures and must develop plans for large-scale workforce reductions. Federal agencies are also tasked with identifying and eliminating or consolidating non-essential functions.

Within 30 days, senior White House officials will submit a list of additional committees and boards recommended for termination. The administration emphasized that these actions reflect the president’s commitment to eliminating ineffective government programs and responding to public demands for reform. Trump also expressed his desire to address government inefficiencies and voiced hope that the courts would support these measures.
