Trump domestic policy bill advances after GOP leaders appease conservatives

The Trump domestic policy bill cleared a major hurdle Sunday night as the House Budget Committee narrowly approved it. The vote followed tense negotiations with GOP conservatives who initially blocked the bill on Friday.

The final vote was 17-16, split along party lines. Four Republicans who opposed the bill last week voted “present,” allowing it to move forward. Their shift came after last-minute changes were made to meet their demands.

The bill includes large increases in military and immigration enforcement spending. It also extends Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, which are set to expire this year. To offset the costs, the bill slashes Medicaid, food assistance, and clean energy programs.

Conservatives voiced concerns about the growing deficit. They demanded tougher Medicaid work requirements and faster rollbacks of clean energy tax credits. GOP leaders worked through the weekend to secure enough support.

Rep. Ralph Norman of South Carolina, one of the previous holdouts, said, “I’m excited about the changes we made,” before voting present. He declined to specify what changes were made.

Reps. Chip Roy, Andrew Clyde, and Josh Brecheen also shifted from “no” to “present.” Their votes were crucial for advancing the legislation after Friday’s failed attempt.

Democrats, led by Rep. Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania, questioned the process. Boyle asked Chairman Jodey Arrington of Texas to reveal any backroom deals. Arrington declined, saying negotiations were still underway and would continue through the week.

The Trump domestic policy bill faces further challenges in the full House. Even if it passes there, it will hit resistance in the Senate. Many Republican senators oppose the current version and have called for major revisions.

Despite the tension, GOP leaders remain hopeful. They aim to bring the bill to a floor vote within days. The final shape will depend on further internal negotiations and growing pressure to deliver on Trump’s legislative agenda.

The path forward remains uncertain. However, Sunday’s vote marks a key step toward turning the Trump domestic policy bill into law.
