Trump Claims Canada ‘Considering’ Statehood in Exchange for Free Missile Defense

President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by suggesting Canada is weighing an unusual proposal. He claims the country could receive free access to the U.S. missile defense system dubbed the “Golden Dome” if it becomes the 51st state. However, Canadian leaders have repeatedly dismissed the idea.

Trump announced the offer in a social media post, stating Canada would pay nothing for the Golden Dome if it joined the U.S. He insisted officials were “considering” the deal, despite strong pushback from Ottawa. The proposal follows months of Trump’s remarks about potentially annexing Canada, an idea that has drawn sharp criticism.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has firmly rejected the notion. After winning election last month partly due to public opposition to Trump’s stance he declared Canada “not for sale, ever.” King Charles III also appeared to address the issue during a speech to Parliament, emphasizing Canadian sovereignty.

The Golden Dome project, estimated to cost $175 billion, aims to create a satellite-based missile defense network. Trump has said it will be operational within three years and has suggested including Canada in its protection. While Carney’s office confirmed security discussions with the U.S., they clarified these talks focus on mutual defense partnerships, not statehood.

Politicians view Trump’s latest comments as more symbolic than substantive. Canada has long maintained its independence, and public sentiment strongly opposes merging with the U.S. Still, the proposal has sparked debate over North American security cooperation and the future of U.S.-Canada relations.
