Trump Announces Direct Talks With Iran During Meeting With Netanyahu

President Trump announced Monday that the U.S. will begin direct engagement with Iran.

Speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mr. Trump stated, “We’re having direct talks with Iran,” adding that a significant meeting is set for Saturday. “We have a very big meeting, and we’ll see what can happen,” he said. The president warned that Iran would be “in great danger” if the talks do not go well.

The announcement came during a high-stakes meeting with Netanyahu as the U.S. prepares to impose a 17% tariff on Israeli imports, effective Wednesday. Mr. Trump said the two leaders had lunch and a series of meetings, noting, “I think we’ve come up to some pretty good solutions and conclusions.” He confirmed that they discussed the “obvious” issue of Iran and the “less obvious” issue of trade.

Netanyahu responded by pledging that Israel would eliminate its trade deficit with the U.S. and reduce other trade barriers. “We intend to do it very quickly. We think it’s the right thing to do,” he said.
