Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to visit Washington, D.C. on Monday. He will meet President Donald Trump to continue discussions on pursuing lasting peace in Eastern Europe. The announcement followed Trump’s Friday summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. That meeting focused on ending the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
Zelenskyy shared the news in a post on X. He expressed gratitude for Trump’s invitation and emphasized the urgency of the talks. He stated, “On Monday, I will meet President Trump to discuss details about ending the war and saving lives.”
After the Putin meeting, Trump and Zelenskyy spoke by phone. The call began privately and later included other European leaders. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also joined the extended discussion. Zelenskyy reported a “long and substantive” conversation with Trump. He also noted Trump’s strong support for a potential three-party summit with Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S.
Trump confirmed Zelenskyy’s upcoming visit early Saturday via Truth Social. He described their phone call as “very positive” and said progress was underway. He wrote, “Everyone agreed that the best way forward is a peace agreement—not a ceasefire that often fails.”
Trump added that if Monday’s meeting with Zelenskyy succeeds, a direct follow-up with Putin will be scheduled. That session could potentially lead to a breakthrough, with pursuing lasting peace as the core objective. Although no agreement was signed on Friday, both Trump and Putin praised the summit. Trump called it “very warm” and highlighted the constructive tone.
During an interview, Trump said, “It was a warm meeting between two major nations. We’re close to something real.” Putin echoed similar optimism, describing the atmosphere as respectful and goal-oriented.
This was the first official U.S.-Russia summit since June 2021. At that time, former President Joe Biden led the administration. Just eight months later, the war in Ukraine began. Since then, Trump and Putin have held several phone calls to discuss possible resolutions. Now, with Zelenskyy traveling to Washington, all parties are moving closer to pursuing lasting peace through diplomacy. The global community continues to watch closely as the next steps unfold.
