A Georgia child shooting shocked a community and led to serious charges against two family members. Police arrested a 13-year-old boy and his grandmother after the teen allegedly shot and killed his 8-year-old cousin inside their grandmother’s Bainbridge home.
Both boys had stayed together at the house when the shooting happened late at night. The teen reportedly used a 9mm handgun to shoot Kylen Powell in the face. Authorities are still investigating how the teen obtained the gun, which disappeared before police arrived.
When deputies reached the scene, they found Kylen motionless on the living room floor. Medical responders quickly confirmed his death. Officers searched the home but failed to find the firearm.
The teenager now faces felony murder and aggravated assault charges. Prosecutors charged his grandmother, Knisha Ann Perkins, age 49, with three counts of cruelty to children in the second degree and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
After the Georgia child shooting, officials urge families to take extra care. Deputy Coroner DeWitt Phillip warned about the dangers of leaving guns unsecured where children live.
“Kids do not think like adults,” Phillip said. “They watch TV and believe people get up after being shot. But in real life, they don’t.” He urged parents to lock up firearms and keep them out of children’s reach at all times.
Phillip added, “I have seen many tragedies like this. Each one breaks our hearts. Families lose loved ones, and we share their pain deeply.”
The Georgia child shooting devastated both families and the community. Residents demand greater awareness about gun safety and stronger prevention efforts.
Law enforcement continues investigating while supporting the victim’s family. Meanwhile, officials urge all families to secure firearms properly and teach children about gun dangers. Only by taking these essential steps can tragedies like this end.
