Spotify is preparing to roll out a redesigned app for Android Auto in the coming months. This major update will introduce new functionality, including full support for the popular Spotify Jam feature. The announcement came as part of Google’s car tech reveals during the latest Google I/O event.
The update brings an enhanced user experience to Spotify on Android Auto. It takes advantage of Google’s updated “Car App Library,” which now offers greater development freedom. This new flexibility allows apps to include more dynamic features and better integrate with in-car displays.
One standout addition is the integration of Spotify Jam. This social feature lets users contribute to a shared playlist without pairing devices. Instead, users can simply scan a QR code to join in. Once connected, they can add tracks to the queue in real-time.
While Spotify Jam has existed on mobile devices for some time, its inclusion in cars is new. On Android Auto, a “Jam” button will appear in the Now Playing interface. Pressing it will generate a QR code on the car’s display. Friends can scan this code to join the session immediately.
During a jam session, the car’s screen shows who’s connected. Drivers or hosts can also remove participants with a single tap. This streamlined control makes group listening easy and safe. On road trips or long drives, Spotify Jam can add a fun, collaborative music experience.
Thanks to Google’s improvements, other music services are getting upgrades too. Amazon Music and YouTube Music will also benefit from the expanded Car App Library. These changes mean developers can create richer and more interactive car apps.
Spotify hasn’t shared an exact release date for the updated app. However, the company has confirmed it will arrive “in the coming months.” Android Auto users should stay tuned for more announcements soon.
With better features and smarter design, the new app will make Spotify Jam in the car more exciting than ever.
