Two planes collided at a South Carolina airport, injuring two passengers and disrupting travel plans. The incident occurred when a grounded plane was struck by another aircraft while taxiing. Because of the collision, airport staff asked all passengers to leave the affected plane immediately for their safety.
Breeze Airways, a Utah-based budget airline, shared information about the event. Their flight MX509 was en route from Las Vegas to Norfolk, Virginia. However, due to thunderstorms near Norfolk International Airport, the flight diverted and landed at Charleston International Airport in the evening.
Once the Airbus A220-300 aircraft landed, it parked on the tarmac while waiting for fuel to continue the trip. Meanwhile, a Boeing 787-10 operated by All Nippon Airways (ANA) was taxiing nearby. Suddenly, the ANA plane’s left wingtip struck the tail of the Breeze Airways aircraft. This collision happened shortly after the Breeze plane had landed.
ANA quickly confirmed that its Boeing jet had contacted equipment positioned close to the Breeze Airways plane. Five people were on board the ANA flight at the time. Fortunately, all of them exited the plane without injuries.
According to local news outlet WCSC, law enforcement and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene promptly. Breeze Airways confirmed that two people received treatment for minor injuries after the collision. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that ANA Flight 9397 was taxiing with only crew members on board when the accident occurred.
Following the collision, airport staff safely transported all Breeze Airways passengers by bus to the terminal. Breeze Airways arranged a replacement aircraft to continue the flight to Virginia. Eventually, the passengers arrived in Norfolk early the next morning.
Both Breeze Airways and ANA are cooperating fully with airport authorities and investigators. Meanwhile, the FAA has launched a formal investigation into the South Carolina airport collision. Authorities want to find out how the incident happened and take steps to prevent similar accidents in the future.
This incident highlights important concerns about ground safety at busy airports. Officials continue working hard to improve safety protocols. At the same time, the affected passengers received timely care and support to help them recover from the disruption.
