On Monday, President Donald Trump stated that Europe will carry most of the responsibility in offering security guarantees for Ukraine. He emphasized, however, that the United States will play a supporting role.
His remarks came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Washington, D.C., to discuss pathways to end the war in Ukraine. The visit followed Trump’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. European leaders also joined the discussions.
During a White House meeting, Trump revealed that Putin has agreed to consider certain conditions for peace. “President Putin agreed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine,” Trump said. He noted that this forms the foundation of ongoing diplomatic talks.
Trump appeared confident about the prospects. “I believe European nations will take most of the burden,” he added. “We will support them and ensure a strong, secure agreement.” He also mentioned the possibility of territory exchanges based on the current line of conflict.
On Sunday, Trump stated that Ukraine could end the war if it ceded Crimea to Russia and dropped its NATO ambitions. That proposal remains controversial. Meanwhile, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that Putin is open to protection measures for Ukraine similar to NATO’s Article 5 commitments.
Earlier on Monday, Trump suggested that the U.S. might send troops to Ukraine after a peace deal. He clarified that the deployment would directly prevent future Russian aggression. “We’ll help them out,” Trump said. “We’ll be involved.”
Zelenskyy welcomed U.S. support and called it essential for Ukraine’s long-term stability. “The United States and our allied leaders provide the backbone of security in Ukraine,” he said. Zelenskyy also praised the U.S. for sending strong and clear signals of support.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that Europe accepts its role. He emphasized that, above all, peace in Ukraine protects Europe’s own security. “We need a strong Ukrainian army and solid European commitments,” Macron said. “We know the cost, and we accept it.”
As a result, the emphasis on security guarantees for Ukraine reflects growing unity among Western powers. Trump, Zelenskyy, and European leaders now appear aligned in preventing future Russian incursions. Looking ahead, as peace talks continue, security guarantees for Ukraine will remain central to the strategy for long-term regional stability.
