Scale AI CEO Warns U.S. Risks Falling Behind China in AI Race

Alexandr Wang, the 28-year-old self-made billionaire and CEO of the $14 billion company Scale AI, is emerging as one of the most influential voices in the AI world and his latest warning is urgent. He believes the United States is in real danger of falling behind China in the race to dominate artificial intelligence.

According to Wang, China has implemented a sweeping, all-encompassing AI master plan integrating its economy, government, and broader society to ensure it leads globally by 2030. “The Chinese Communist Party has enacted a whole-of-government approach to leading in AI,” he said, describing their strategy as aggressive and highly coordinated.

What worries him most is the military and cybersecurity implications. “If China races ahead on AI and, let’s say, they start applying AI to their military and cyber operations more effectively than we do in the United States they’ll be able to hack into our systems. They’ll be able to hack into our energy grid and shut it off,” Wang warned.

Known in Silicon Valley circles and beyond, Wang has become a familiar figure among tech leaders, policymakers, and global influencers. With ties to key players like Sam Altman and regular appearances at elite gatherings like Davos, Sun Valley, and the Paris AI Summit, he’s using his growing platform to urge U.S. leaders to act fast.

He estimates that the U.S. has a narrow one-to-two-year window to maintain its edge in AI before China catches up, or even surpasses it.
