Remains Found in Long Island Harbor May Belong to Missing Man

A long-standing mystery in Long Island may finally be coming to an end. Recently, volunteer divers discovered human remains found inside a submerged vehicle near Mount Sinai Harbor. According to reports, the car matched the one driven by Robert Long, who went missing years ago.

Initially, the search began near Cedar Beach boat ramp. Two nonprofit groups, Exploring With a Mission and Adventures With Purpose, joined forces to investigate. Using sonar equipment, they scanned the harbor waters thoroughly. Eventually, they detected an unusual object under the surface.

Consequently, the sonar revealed the shape of a vehicle buried beneath layers of silt and marine growth. At that point, McIntosh and his partner, known as “Diver Dan,” knew they had to act fast. They had targeted this specific area based on tips from a Facebook group following Long’s disappearance.

Soon after attaching a magnet to the object, Dan dove into the water. Within minutes, he confirmed it was a Chrysler PT Cruiser. Furthermore, he found human remains found inside the driver’s side of the vehicle. He brought one bone to the surface to alert authorities.

Immediately, local law enforcement responded to the divers’ call. While the Suffolk County Marine Bureau began their inspection, poor water conditions forced them to delay further searches. However, they resumed the operation later and recovered additional remains.

Eventually, a crane lifted the car from 19 feet of water. Clearly, it had been submerged for a significant period. Although the medical examiner has not officially confirmed the identity, the discovery brings hope to Robert Long’s family.

McIntosh later met with Long’s wife, Joanne. Over the years, she had visited that boat ramp many times. She strongly believed her husband was there. Following the discovery, she expressed gratitude and shared hope for other families still searching.

Importantly, McIntosh highlighted the emotional impact of their work. He stated that each case brings closure to families left in limbo. In addition, he credited sonar technology and teamwork for the success.

Ultimately, the latest case of human remains found in Long Island may offer peace to a family after years of unanswered questions.
