Record Number of Americans Seeking UK Residency Amid Political Uncertainty

A record number of American citizens are now applying to live or settle in the United Kingdom. In the 12 months leading to March, more than 6,000 Americans applied to remain in the UK permanently or become British citizens.

According to new government figures, 6,618 US citizens submitted British citizenship applications during that period. Over 1,900 of these applications came in the first quarter of 2025, marking the highest quarterly figure since records began in 2004.

Many applications coincided with the early months of Donald Trump’s second term. Immigration experts link the increase to heightened political divisions and fear of policy changes in the US.

Several law firms in the UK report a noticeable rise in inquiries from US nationals. These inquiries increased sharply after Trump’s election win and his new immigration announcements.

London-based immigration lawyer Muhunthan Paramesvaran said more Americans want to keep the UK as a long-term option. Many already residing in Britain now prefer dual citizenship, just in case they don’t wish to return.

Zeena Luchowa, a partner at another immigration firm, stated the motivation is not limited to US nationals. She noted that other residents in the US are also looking to relocate due to the current political environment.

However, some officials caution that the trend might also relate to existing visa pathways. Most of the 5,521 settlement applications submitted last year were based on family or spousal links.

Still, experts predict that applications may rise again. The UK government recently extended the required residency period for settlement from five years to ten.

Yet, Labour government ministers hint at possible exceptions for applicants making strong economic or social contributions. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed this in a recent parliamentary statement.

She also said the government would soon raise English language standards for long-term UK residency. According to her, integration and language skills are vital to contributing fully to British society.

Meanwhile, British authorities continue to tighten overall immigration. Prime Minister Keir Starmer insists the UK must control borders and avoid unchecked migration.

Net migration fell by nearly half in 2024. Nevertheless, the recent rise in US applications stands out as unique.
