Pope Francis, the first pope from Latin America and a globally recognized figure for his modest approach and dedication to the marginalized, has passed away at the age of 88. His death was formally announced by Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo, who now assumes the responsibility of overseeing the Church’s operations until a new pope is elected.
Preparations are underway in the Vatican for the initial ceremonial steps following the pope’s passing. His body is expected to be moved to the private chapel of the Domus Santa Marta residence, where he lived during his pontificate. Vatican officials will gather there to offer their respects.
A medical evaluation will be conducted by the head of the Vatican health service to confirm the cause of death, with an official report anticipated by the end of the day. The ritual confirmation of death will then be conducted by the camerlengo, following the traditional process observed after the passing of a pope.
For the faithful, a public prayer service is planned in St. Peter’s Square, where Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, the archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, is expected to lead the Rosary in honor of the late pontiff.
