Atlanta police are investigating a deadly shooting in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood near Edgewood Avenue. When officers arrived, they found 11 people shot. Soon after, the medical examiner identified 27-year-old Santos J. Wyatt as the man who died at the scene. Emergency responders confirmed his death before transport.
Meanwhile, ten others seven men and three women suffered injuries. Paramedics quickly transported them to nearby hospitals for treatment. Notably, one victim, an 18-year-old male, remains in critical condition. Police Chief Darin Schierbaum shared this detail during a media briefing.
According to investigators, four suspects three men and one woman approached a group near a stopped streetcar. Moments later, they opened fire on the crowd. As a result, chaos broke out along Edgewood Avenue. The suspects quickly fled the area, and people scattered for cover.
Shortly after, officers recovered 34 shell casings and several guns at the scene. They secured the area and began collecting evidence. Additionally, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is helping with the ballistics investigation. Forensic teams are now analyzing the recovered shell casings.
Throughout the same weekend, Atlanta faced 12 separate shooting incidents. Altogether, these shootings left 29 people injured and two dead.In response, Mayor Andre Dickens addressed the public. He said, “We haven’t had a weekend like this in a long time.”
Moreover, he stressed that “guns are not the answer.” He called for unity, cooperation, and real solutions to violence.At the same time, Schierbaum pledged a full investigation. He promised that police would not stop until they arrest those responsible.
Clearly, gun violence on Edgewood has rattled the community. Many residents are now calling for change and stronger safety efforts. So far this year, Atlanta has recorded 57 homicides. By comparison, the same period last year saw 76 killings.
