The Philadelphia Memorial Day mass shooting has left two people dead and nine others wounded. The gunfire erupted late Monday night at Fairmount Park, shocking the city during a national day of remembrance.
Police say the shooting began at 10:27 p.m. while crowds were gathered at the park. Multiple shooters opened fire on the crowd, with teenagers among those struck.
Authorities confirmed the deaths of one adult male and one adult female at the scene. Among the injured are a 15, 16, and 17-year-old. The remaining victims are adults.
The Philadelphia Memorial Day mass shooting has triggered a massive investigation. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel described the crime scene as large and complex. He noted the difficulty of identifying suspects in such a chaotic environment.
“When individuals fire into a crowd, it’s unpredictable and devastating,” Bethel said during a late-night press conference. “We do everything we can to stay ahead of threats, but this was senseless violence.”
Police have not yet identified the victims or the shooters. No arrests have been made, and no weapons have been recovered from the scene. Authorities are reviewing social media footage, which captured multiple gunshots being fired.
Bethel promised updates as detectives gather more evidence throughout the day. He also acknowledged the emotional weight of the tragedy occurring on Memorial Day.
“This is a day when we remember those who gave their lives for this country. Instead, we’re mourning more lost lives in our own city,” he said.
The Philadelphia Memorial Day mass shooting follows a string of recent violent incidents across the country. Earlier this week, another mass shooting in New Mexico left three dead and fourteen injured.
Police in Philadelphia are urging anyone with information or footage to come forward. As of now, the motive and number of shooters remain unclear.
