Pentagon Suspends Gender-Affirming Care for Transgender Service Members

The Pentagon has abruptly halted all gender-affirming care for transgender troops, according to a newly revealed memo. This move implements President Donald Trump’s revived ban on transgender military service, reversing Biden-era protections.

The Defense Department directive prohibits new hormone treatments and surgical procedures for transgender service members. Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Stephen Ferrara ordered immediate implementation, stating “take the necessary steps” to enforce the policy change.

Approximately 4,240 active-duty and National Guard personnel will be affected. One anonymous transgender service member called the decision “the latest slap in the face,” arguing it denies equal medical care. Legal advocates condemned the move as “needlessly disrespectful and cruel.”

This policy shift follows the Supreme Court’s May 6 decision allowing enforcement of Trump’s military ban during ongoing legal challenges. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a conservative media personality, had previously vowed to block gender-affirming care, calling it “lunacy” taxpayers shouldn’t fund.

The Pentagon’s reversal comes despite recent Gallup polling showing 58% of Americans support transgender military service. However, this represents a significant drop from 71% approval in 2019, reflecting the nation’s deepening cultural divides.

Transgender troops now face discharge by June 6 unless they voluntarily leave. The policy reinstatement fulfills Trump’s January executive order overturning Biden’s inclusive military rules. Critics warn the ban undermines military readiness by removing qualified personnel.
