Pay by Bank Gains Momentum as Verizon and Trustly Expand Seamless Retail Payments

Pay by bank gains momentum in the United States as Verizon and Trustly partner to offer it in retail stores. Previously available online, this method now reaches in-person shoppers. Verizon aims to provide secure and smooth payment experiences across all platforms.

Trustly has collaborated with Verizon since 2021, helping customers pay bills through their bank accounts. Now, the partnership enters a new phase. As of May 2025, customers can use pay by bank while shopping in Verizon’s physical stores.

Attie Muse, Verizon’s senior director of payment strategy, explained the goal. She said many customers visit stores to buy phones, upgrades, or accessories. Until now, linking bank accounts in-store was difficult. Thanks to Trustly’s widget, that process is now quick and seamless.

Pay by bank gains momentum because of its speed and ease. The one-step enrollment process eliminates manual data entry. Previously, customers often missed autopay discounts because they used cards at checkout. Later, they had to register online for autopay. Now, that step happens instantly in stores.

This collaboration offers big benefits for both customers and Verizon. Muse noted that reducing payment acceptance costs was one reason they introduced pay by bank. By skipping card fees and avoiding traditional ACH friction, Verizon saves money. Meanwhile, shoppers enjoy better discounts.

Trustly’s Kerrie Larpenter said many younger customers prefer open banking tools. These tools help with budgeting and offer cash-back incentives. Gen Z and millennials, in particular, find pay by bank useful. Trustly’s research shows interest grows by 72% when discounts are offered.

However, Pay by bank gains momentum as customers gain more control. They can now complete transactions from their own phones in Verizon stores. This development merges convenience with security.

Larpenter said Verizon’s customer-focused approach provides a model for others. As more merchants follow suit, open banking could become standard in retail.
