OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed on Tuesday that the highly anticipated GPT-4.5 will begin rolling out to ChatGPT Plus subscribers “over a few days” instead of all at once. The gradual release aims to ensure a smoother experience for users and prevent overloading the system.
Altman explained the decision on social media, stating, “There is no perfect way to do this; we wanted to do it for everyone tomorrow, but it would have meant we had to launch with a very low rate limit. We think people are gonna use this a lot and love it, so it’s better to stagger people in rather than have everyone hit it hard at the same time.”
GPT-4.5, the latest version of OpenAI’s language model, was announced last Thursday. It is expected to be the last version that does not incorporate chain-of-thought prompting, a method designed to simulate human reasoning by breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps. While GPT-4.5 doesn’t fully utilize this approach yet, OpenAI claims early testing shows the model delivers more natural interactions.
The new version boasts a broader knowledge base, an improved ability to follow user intent, and enhanced emotional intelligence, making it particularly effective for tasks like writing, programming, and problem-solving. Additionally, OpenAI expects GPT-4.5 to hallucinate—produce incorrect or nonsensical information—less frequently than its predecessors.
