One Big Beautiful Bill Heads to House Vote Amid GOP Tensions and Tight Deadline

The House is set to vote Wednesday on President Donald Trump’s highly touted tax and spending package, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill. After nearly 12 hours of debate, the House Rules Committee cleared the bill late Tuesday night for a full chamber vote.

Republican leaders are moving swiftly. They aim to pass the legislation before the Independence Day holiday. However, several GOP members have voiced concerns about key provisions. These internal disagreements may complicate final passage.

Despite resistance, House Republicans praised the bill’s potential impact. “This bill is President Trump’s agenda, and we are making it law,” leaders said Tuesday. They emphasized its economic benefits for working families.

Only two Republicans, Reps. Ralph Norman of South Carolina and Chip Roy of Texas, voted against moving the bill forward in committee. Both had voiced earlier concerns about the bill’s size and spending levels. No Democrats supported the measure.

During the Rules Committee hearing, Democrats offered numerous amendments. All were rejected along party lines. They argued the bill benefits the wealthy while slashing Medicaid for low-income Americans. Rep. Gwen Moore of California criticized the bill’s cost. “If you vote for this bill, you’re adding $4 trillion to the debt,” she said.

Republicans defended the proposal. They cited middle-class relief provisions, including a $2,200 child tax credit and temporary tax deductions for tipped and overtime wages. “Voting against this bill is voting against 40 million hardworking Americans,” said Rep. Jason Smith of Missouri.

The One Big Beautiful Bill spans more than 900 pages. It addresses taxes, immigration, defense spending, energy policy, and the national debt. A revised version recently passed the Senate, with changes affecting Medicaid funding and green energy tax credits.

Some House Republicans want to revise the Senate’s version. Reps. Scott Perry and Andy Ogles introduced amendments to roll back green energy incentives and reinstate original House provisions. Another amendment from Rep. Andrew Clyde aimed to restore gun rights language cut during Senate review.

If the House changes the bill, it must return to the Senate, delaying final approval. Republicans fear this would push the vote past July 4th. Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged weather-related flight delays could affect attendance on Wednesday.

The House is expected to begin proceedings at 9 a.m. ET. Lawmakers will first vote on whether to debate the bill. If approved, a final vote may occur later in the day. With a slim majority, Republicans cannot afford to lose more than three votes if no Democrats support the measure.

Despite complications, GOP leaders remain focused. The goal is clear: get the One Big Beautiful Bill to Trump’s desk before the holiday.
