Family tragedy unfolds after collision near Sandusky River

An Ohio train crash has tragically claimed the lives of three people, including a 5-year-old child found near the accident site. The incident occurred Sunday evening near the Sandusky River in Fremont. On Monday, authorities searched under the bridge and discovered the young child’s body. However, they have not yet disclosed the exact location where they recovered it.

Meanwhile, the City of Fremont identified the two women who died in the crash as 50-year-old Ram Masan and 34-year-old O Ny Zar. Both women belonged to a family visiting from Fort Wayne, Indiana. According to Mayor Daniel R. Sanchez, the family came to Fremont for a fishing trip. Consequently, the tragedy has deeply affected the local community.

Officials reported that the train struck Masan and Zar around 7:30 p.m. near the river. However, authorities have not confirmed whether the children suffered injuries from the train. Nevertheless, a 14-month-old child from the family sustained critical injuries, and medical staff flew the baby to a nearby hospital.

Several eyewitnesses described the scene during the crash. For example, David Tucker III, who was fishing nearby, heard the train’s horn and watched people fall into the water as the train passed. Immediately, he called 911. Additionally, Tucker noted the area displayed a “no trespassing” sign on the train trestle.

Furthermore, fifteen-year-old Tyson Kieffer also witnessed the crash. He spotted the baby in a purple jacket floating in the river and quickly rescued her. Kieffer said the baby went under the water and resurfaced, which frightened him. Despite the danger, he kept the baby safe until rescuers arrived.

Medical personnel transferred the 14-month-old to Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center for emergency care. Meanwhile, Mayor Sanchez expressed sorrow and urged the community to pray for the affected families. Moreover, he emphasized Fremont’s welcoming spirit toward visitors and anglers.

Norfolk Southern, the company that operated the train, expressed deep sadness over the tragedy. Furthermore, the company is working closely with local authorities to investigate the crash. Ultimately, the incident highlights the dangers near train tracks and serves as a reminder to stay safe.

This Ohio train crash has left a lasting impact on the families involved and the Fremont community.
