NYC Mayoral Race Sees Mamdani Lead

A new survey highlights the state of the NYC mayoral race as voters prepare for Thursday’s debate. The poll shows Zohran Mamdani maintaining a substantial lead, giving him momentum in the contest. The NYC mayoral race also indicates strong voter enthusiasm and commitment, suggesting turnout could shape the final results.

Mamdani, a self-described Democratic socialist, leads with 49% support among registered voters. Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo trails at 28%, while Republican Curtis Sliwa holds 13%. Among likely voters, Mamdani rises to 52%, outperforming Cuomo at 28% and Sliwa at 14%. Former Mayor Eric Adams remains on the ballot with 2–3% support despite withdrawing from the race in late September.

Democratic pollster Chris Anderson explained that Adams appears on the ballot because he withdrew after the deadline. Some voters may still select him, affecting total vote counts. The survey also notes Mamdani’s support has grown since September, up five points among likely voters and four points among registered voters.

Mamdani performs strongest among very liberal voters (78%), voters under 30 (67%), Democrats (63%), and women under 45 (62%). Cuomo gains support from moderates (44%), voters aged 65 and older (44%), women over 45 (42%), and independents (35%). Sliwa remains strongest with Republicans (60%) and Trump’s 2024 supporters (58%). Nonwhite voters favor Mamdani, including 51% of Black voters and 52% of Hispanic voters.

The survey finds Mamdani supporters more enthusiastic and certain to vote. Seventy-five percent describe themselves as extremely or very enthusiastic, compared with 59% for Sliwa and 43% for Cuomo. Similarly, 89% of Mamdani backers say they will definitely vote, compared with 82% for Sliwa and 75% for Cuomo.

When voters consider which candidate can handle the city’s top issues—crime, cost of living, housing, and taxes—Mamdani leads in all categories. Between 40% and 49% of voters say he can address these problems effectively, while Cuomo scores 32% to 33% and Sliwa ranges from 17% to 26%. Mamdani also outpaces his rivals in personal traits, including honesty, empathy, and ability to bring change. Cuomo slightly edges him in perceived leadership strength.

The survey shows growing satisfaction with New York City, now at 42%, up five points since September. Support for the Palestinians over Israel is slightly declining, with 6% more backing Palestinians. Among these voters, 70% support Mamdani. The findings highlight voter priorities and suggest potential implications for the November election.
