Mike Waltz Takes Responsibility for Leaked Signal Chat Involving Military Plans

US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has admitted fault after a journalist was accidentally added to a private Signal group chat where high-ranking officials discussed military strikes in Yemen. Waltz stated he takes “full responsibility” for the group’s creation, calling the incident “embarrassing.”

The journalist, later revealed to be Jeffrey Goldberg, reported seeing classified details—including weapons, targets, and timing—hours before the strikes occurred, though this information was withheld from his published article. Waltz denied knowing Goldberg and claimed the journalist’s phone number was not in his contacts. He suggested an unnamed associate may have mistakenly added Goldberg instead of an intended participant.

President Donald Trump dismissed the incident as a “glitch” with no operational impact, while intelligence officials denied any classified material was shared. However, lawmakers from both parties have demanded an investigation, calling it a serious security breach.

The chat also included Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who criticized Europe’s reliance on US protection of shipping lanes. Messages showed frustration over what they called European “free-loading,” with one remark describing it as “PATHETIC.”

The leak has raised legal concerns, with a watchdog group filing a lawsuit alleging violations of federal record-keeping laws due to the chat’s auto-delete feature. Critics condemned the use of a civilian app for sensitive discussions, calling it a major lapse in national security protocol.
