Migrants Transferred from Guantanamo Back to US Amid Legal Challenge

All undocumented migrants previously held at Guantanamo Bay have been transferred back to the United States, weeks after being sent to the military base in Cuba. Reports indicate the detainees were moved to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Louisiana.

The Trump administration had initially expanded the Guantanamo Migrant Operations Center to accommodate up to 30,000 people as part of broader immigration policy changes. However, only a few hundred migrants were ever detained there.

A Pentagon official confirmed that, as of March 13, no migrants remained at the facility. The decision to transfer them comes just days before a federal judge is set to hear a lawsuit challenging the legality of detaining migrants at Guantanamo.

Since February, approximately 300 migrants from 27 countries have been processed through the facility. Advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, argue that detaining migrants at the offshore site violates their rights and have filed lawsuits demanding access to legal counsel.

Despite criticism from human rights organizations, President Donald Trump defended the use of Guantanamo for detaining undocumented migrants deemed security risks. His administration had planned further expansion, though the current status of those plans remains unclear.
