Mexican Navy ship crash under US investigation after fatal Brooklyn Bridge collision

A deadly Mexican Navy ship crash in New York has triggered a high-level investigation involving both US and Mexican authorities. The incident occurred Saturday night when the Cuauhtémoc, a Mexican Navy training vessel, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge.

Two people on board the ship died in the crash. At least 19 others sustained injuries, with several taken to nearby hospitals. Emergency teams safely evacuated 27 crew members. Authorities confirmed that all 277 personnel aboard were accounted for.

Preliminary reports suggest the Cuauhtémoc lost power before striking the bridge. Videos from the scene showed the ship’s towering masts snapping as crowds watched in shock from the shoreline.

Despite the crash, the Brooklyn Bridge suffered no structural damage. It reopened to traffic late Saturday. The vessel, however, sustained significant damage and lost all three of its masts. Officials have towed it to a nearby pier for inspection.

The National Transportation Safety Board has deployed a team to New York. Investigators from both the United States and Mexico will examine the events leading up to the Mexican Navy ship crash.

The ship’s tallest mast measured 48.2 meters (158 feet), while the bridge offers 41.1 meters (135 feet) of clearance at its center. Officials are now looking into how the ship entered that part of the East River.

Mexico’s Navy Secretary, Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, promised full transparency in the investigation. He emphasized accountability and cooperation with US counterparts.

The Cuauhtémoc had left Acapulco on April 6. It was scheduled to stop in New York and Aberdeen, Scotland, for the upcoming Tall Ships race in July.

The tragic Mexican Navy ship crash has raised questions about safety procedures, route planning, and equipment reliability aboard naval training vessels.

As authorities examine the causes, families of those lost await answers.
