Meta has taken a step to improve user privacy in its AI app by adding a clear warning. The company now urges users to avoid sharing personal or sensitive information when posting to the app’s public feed. This update follows growing concerns about users unintentionally exposing private details.
Earlier, many users shared intimate and sensitive data in the AI app’s public “discover” feed. This feed displays user posts and interactions openly, which caught privacy experts off guard. Many people did not realize that their voice and text chats could be seen by anyone. Consequently, the app became known for showcasing a surprising amount of private information.
For instance, some users posted questions about personal health or family legal issues. One user even added “keep this private” after publicly sharing an embarrassing chat. Such posts highlight the confusion around the app’s sharing features.
Privacy advocates criticized Meta, noting the company failed to make the app’s public nature clear. Unlike other AI chatbots, Meta’s app includes a social feed, which users did not expect. Rachel Tobac, a security expert, pointed out that users generally assume AI chats remain private. Therefore, this mismatch created a serious security and user experience problem.
In response, Meta introduced a prompt that appears the first time users share a post publicly. This prompt warns them to avoid sharing personal or sensitive information because public posts are visible to everyone. The warning also notes that shared prompts may be suggested across other Meta platforms.
Moreover, recent changes to the feed now seem to exclude user text exchanges, showing only AI-generated images and videos. Whether this adjustment will stay permanent remains unclear.
If users want to remove their past public posts, Meta provides a simple way. They can go to their profile, select Data & Privacy, then Manage your information, and finally choose to make all public prompts visible only to themselves.
By encouraging users to avoid sharing personal or sensitive information, Meta hopes to improve privacy awareness and reduce accidental oversharing. The update marks a small but important step toward safer AI app usage.
