Meta is losing top AI talent to rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, despite offering annual packages worth over $2 million. Venture Capitalist Deedy Das recently highlighted this trend on X, saying he personally knows three Meta employees who left this week alone. This trend raises serious concerns about Meta’s ability to compete in the AI talent war.
Companies are investing billions in AI infrastructure, but they also need skilled engineers to run it. As demand for top-tier AI professionals grows, startups like Anthropic are becoming magnets for talent. While Meta still pays well, it seems unable to match the appeal of newer AI labs.
Anthropic, in particular, is attracting a growing number of employees from other leading AI organizations. For every 10.6 workers it gains from DeepMind, 8.2 come from OpenAI, and 2 arrive from Hugging Face. In contrast, it loses just one employee to each of these firms. This suggests Anthropic is not just growing fast—it’s dominating the talent game.
Anthropic’s culture is a major draw. According to SignalFire research, the startup fosters autonomy, creativity, and intellectual freedom. Unlike traditional tech giants, it avoids title politics and mandatory management roles. Employees also enjoy flexible schedules and open discussions, which boost overall satisfaction.
Retention data backs up this trend. While the tech industry sees two-year retention rates between 40% and 50%, Anthropic far exceeds that. It leads the AI sector in employee retention, followed closely by Google’s DeepMind at 78%. Most AI startups fall between 63% and 80%, well above the industry average.
Meanwhile, large tech companies continue to lose talent. Around 5.4% of new AI hires come from Google’s non-AI teams, while 4.3% are ex-Meta workers. Microsoft, Amazon, Stripe, and Apple also contribute to this shift, accounting for a combined 9.7% of new hires in the AI field.
Tech giants once symbolized job security and prestige. In 2024, though, layoffs hit the industry hard. Intel cut 15% of its workforce, or about 15,000 jobs, following a disappointing financial report in August. Other major companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Dell, and AMD also trimmed their teams.
In contrast, the AI sector is expanding rapidly. More data centers are under construction, and startups are scaling fast. With better work cultures and growing resources, these firms continue to attract the brightest minds.
