Meta’s digital assistant, Meta AI, powers these interactions across multiple platforms. People can ask Meta AI for directions, generate images, or request information like a conversational AI tool.

Meta reported that Meta AI now serves more than one billion active monthly users. The assistant is available through apps, a stand-alone app, and a website. Users’ interactions influence the kinds of Reels or other content they may see. For example, chatting about family vacations could affect recommended short videos and related advertisements.

The system also considers voice interactions from devices like Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Whether users type or speak, these signals feed into the recommendation engine. However, WhatsApp interactions affect recommendations only if accounts link to other Meta apps. People who do not use Meta AI will not see any changes in recommendations.

Mark Zuckerberg said the company may eventually offer paid options to access enhanced computing or recommendations. Meta also hired AI experts and expanded spending to strengthen generative AI capabilities. These efforts aim to ensure more personalized, relevant content and advertisements across platforms.

Christy Harris, Meta’s privacy and data policy manager, said people already expected generative AI to influence recommendations. The update allows Meta to improve personalization without violating user expectations. Users who actively interact with Meta AI will experience more tailored content, including targeted ads.
