A Kentucky man went from celebrating a historic lottery win to sitting behind bars within just four days.
On Saturday, April 26, James Farthing bought a Powerball ticket for his mother, Linda Grizzle. That $2 ticket ended up winning them a massive $167.3 million jackpot. According to the Kentucky Lottery, it’s the largest prize in state history.
Farthing, 50, and his mom collected the prize on Monday, April 28. The Georgetown man told lottery officials, “It’s going to be a good Mother’s Day.” He also shared that he planned to pay off his debts.
Grizzle could hardly believe the win. She said it still “hasn’t sunk in yet” and called the moment a dream.
However, the joy didn’t last long. By Wednesday, April 30, police arrested Farthing at a hotel in Florida.

Police say Farthing’s girlfriend also caused chaos. She allegedly screamed incoherently and tried to fight other guests. Officers described her as very intoxicated.
When a sheriff’s deputy tried to calm the scene, things got worse. Farthing allegedly kicked the deputy in the face. The blow caused swelling and redness, according to arrest records.
After that, Farthing reportedly tried to run but was caught and arrested.
