Early one morning, a Louisiana man hijacked a construction crane on Interstate 10, which triggered a series of dangerous crashes. Matthew Vincent, 37, from Vinton, caused major disruption by obstructing the highway with the crane boom. As a result, authorities arrested him shortly after the incidents, which led to two injuries and significant property damage.
Initially, Louisiana State Police responded to reports that vehicles were striking a construction crane in a work zone. Upon investigation, they discovered cables from the crane’s boom hanging over the westbound lanes. These cables struck a passing vehicle, thereby causing a chain reaction of crashes.
Moreover, no construction work was active at that time. Furthermore, no construction workers operated the crane when Vincent allegedly hijacked it. Subsequently, police found a Dodge Ram pickup truck key fob inside the crane, which led them to Vincent’s truck abandoned in a nearby field. Vincent then allegedly crossed the highway and unlawfully entered the crane. Afterward, he manipulated the crane boom to block the westbound lanes. Consequently, this reckless act obstructed traffic and caused four separate crashes on the highway. Authorities confirmed that two people suffered injuries from the collisions.
In addition, the crashes resulted in major damage to the crane itself. Besides this, police noted significant property damage and a prolonged closure of Interstate 10. Therefore, Vincent now faces several charges, including simple burglary, aggravated highway obstruction, criminal mischief, pedestrian on the interstate, negligent injury, and multiple counts of hit-and-run driving.
