Law Enforcement Pursuit Ends in 2 Dead After Clear Creek Crash

A deadly law enforcement pursuit ended in tragedy when two people died in a crash in Clear Creek County. The incident involved a suspect wanted for numerous vehicle break-ins. This law enforcement pursuit highlights ongoing issues with vehicle crimes and high-risk chases in the area.

Authorities had been tracking a Chrysler Town and Country involved in more than two dozen vehicle break-ins across nearby counties. The suspect reportedly stole various items, including firearms and ammunition. Law enforcement officers from Clear Creek County and Idaho Springs prepared to intercept the vehicle near Highway 40 and Highway 6.

The Chrysler was spotted just before mid-afternoon. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled. The suspect took a dangerous route, driving the wrong way on an interstate off-ramp. Fortunately, minimal traffic in the area reduced the immediate risk.

After briefly ending their pursuit, officers resumed it once the suspect turned around and sped back eastbound. Deputies deployed stop sticks, but the vehicle kept moving despite its deflated tires. The chase continued on Highway 6, where the suspect lost control near Tunnel 6.

The Chrysler crossed into oncoming lanes and crashed head-on with a Lexus RX350. The Lexus rolled off the road and into Clear Creek. Emergency responders airlifted the Lexus driver to the hospital, but the individual later died. The suspect also died at the crash scene, while a passenger in the Chrysler sustained minor injuries.

The Colorado State Patrol is leading the crash investigation. Meanwhile, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office and Summit County authorities continue probing the suspected break-ins. In a related incident, a Jefferson County patrol vehicle struck a construction plate while heading to assist with the chase. This caused multiple patrol cars to crash as officers attempted to avoid the airborne vehicle. One deputy suffered minor injuries.

Law enforcement officials emphasize the dangers posed by high-speed pursuits and the ongoing impact of vehicle-related crimes. They urge caution and cooperation from the public as investigations proceed.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of those killed. Further updates will follow as the investigation continues. This case underscores the risks law enforcement faces during pursuit operations and highlights the need for coordinated crime prevention efforts.
