Former Vice President Kamala Harris gave her first interview since the 2024 election loss to Donald Trump. Harris offered pointed criticism of business leaders and their response to Trump’s win.
During the interview, Harris called Trump a “tyrant” and criticized American CEOs for failing to protect democratic values. “I believed industry leaders would serve as guardrails for our democracy,” Harris told Maddow. However, they’ve stayed silent.
Furthermore, she expressed disappointment in corporate America, accusing executives of prioritizing profits over democratic responsibility. “Democracy sustains capitalism,” Harris argued. “Capitalism thrives in a democracy, not under authoritarian rule.”
Harris then mocked the idea that billionaires feared personal losses if they spoke against Trump. “They won’t lose their yachts or homes in the Hamptons for defending democracy,” she said. “They just lack courage.”
Harris insisted that speaking out against authoritarianism benefits both the public and the economy. “Still, these titans of industry refuse to act,” she said. “And that inaction threatens guardrails for our democracy.”
She acknowledged the risks involved. According to Harris, Trump’s administration has targeted outspoken critics before. Even so, she urged business leaders to rise to the moment. “At some point, they must protect the institutions people rely on,” Harris said. “These systems need integrity.”
She warned that Trump uses government power to pursue personal agendas. “He’s exploiting federal agencies for his own ego,” she said. “This behavior is dangerous and destabilizing.” The interview aired one day before the release of her new memoir, 107 Days.
The book details her chaotic path to becoming the 2024 Democratic nominee after President Biden exited the race. Harris hopes her story will inspire others to fight for democratic norms. She concluded by reminding viewers, “We can’t afford to lose the guardrails for our democracy again.”
