Judge Gives Trump Admin 2 Weeks in Deportation Standoff

A federal judge has ordered Trump officials to prove they’re working to return wrongfully deported Salvadoran national Kilmar Ábrego García, warning “nothing has been done” since his illegal March 15 removal to an El Salvador mega-prison.

Judge Paula Xinis demanded sworn testimony from four DHS and ICE officials by April 23, rejecting government claims that Ábrego García who has legal protection from deportation could simply present himself at the border. The order comes despite Supreme Court intervention and conflicting administration statements about the deportation being an “error.”

The case has become a flashpoint, with Ábrego García’s wife pleading for his return while Trump officials continue labeling him a gang affiliate. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen will visit the prison this week to check on his condition.
