Iran Responds to Trump’s Letter Amid Stalled Nuclear Talks

Iran has formally responded to a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, state media reported Thursday, marking the latest diplomatic exchange amid stalled negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The response was delivered through Oman on Wednesday, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, though neither the contents of Trump’s letter nor Iran’s reply were disclosed.

“Our policy remains firm on not engaging in direct negotiations under maximum pressure and military threats,” Araghchi said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. However, he left open the possibility of indirect talks, a format used in previous negotiations.

Trump’s letter was reportedly handed to Iranian officials earlier this month by Anwar Gargash, a senior Emirati diplomat, during a visit to Tehran. The outreach comes as the Trump administration continues its “maximum pressure” campaign, imposing new sanctions while publicly suggesting military action remains an option.

Despite the tensions, Trump has repeatedly expressed hope for a new nuclear deal, though Iran has insisted it will not negotiate under coercion. The standoff has left diplomacy at an impasse, with Tehran accelerating its uranium enrichment and Washington tightening economic restrictions.

Analysts suggest Oman’s role as an intermediary signals a potential backchannel effort to revive talks. However, with both sides maintaining hardline positions, prospects for a breakthrough remain uncertain.
